Story 1: Sound of Music, Revised

Jake is introduced to Ellen and embarks on a relationship with her. She takes up quite a bit of his time, and he finds himself growing more attached to her. Imagine his upset when she disappears from his life. Jake’s friend informs him that something terrible has befallen Ellen. However, that isn’t quite the truth, though Jake feels that maybe the original tale of Ellen’s disappearance might have been easier to bear…

Story 2: Straight Charlie and the Really Normal Woman

Charlie is a less than average looking fellow: boring, bland, forgettable. He meets what he calls a ‘normal’ woman, Amelia, an artist. Charlie informs Jake that when he makes love to Amelia she won’t have the lights on. What is she hiding, Charlie wants to know? Curiosity killed the cat springs to mind with this tale!

Story 3: Eighty Beatty and the Mirror

Eighty Beatty is a street bum. He collects books in a quest to learn all about life and the world. A mishap makes him see that life isn’t always found between the pages. An enjoyable tale.

Story 4: Fame Takes the Celluloid Kid to Task

Frank is upset that buildings featured in the many films he has watched are going to be torn down. He hatches a plan to save the buildings and writes a book, complete with photographs, to show how magnificent they are and what a mistake it would be to lose them. However, his plan doesn’t quite work out as he expected.

Story 5: Bewitched by the Babe at Bloomingdale’s

While in Bloomingdale’s, Charlie explains his theory on attracting women to his friend, Jake. A woman, Noelle, listens to their conversation and joins in. Jake leaves Charlie in Noelle’s company and later hears how well Charlie got along with her.

Poor Charlie—he has a very big surprise lurking round the corner…

My favourite story of the book. Hilarious.

Story 6: The Ghost on the IND Line

Sammy’s wife, Sarah, has her fortune told at a party. A secret from her past resurfaces, and Sammy and Jake try their best to lay Sarah’s fears to rest once and for all. A great scene involving two police officers had me laughing out loud. A wonderful, poignant tale.

Story 7: Pre-Apocalyptic Motorcycle Mama

God bless mothers, but sometimes they can be a little overbearing. Klein’s mother, Roberta, comes visiting. She gusts into his personal space like an unwelcome bout of gas. Klein attempts to grin and bear it, but comes close to losing his temper. Roberta douses his ire with a revelation, and Jake realises that reaching age thirty isn’t the end of his life. A somewhat sad tale that made me count my blessings.

Story 8: Nordstrom and the Art of Love

Jake finds his envy levels tested when an old flame, Theo, dates his boss, John. Jake plots to put a spanner in the works (he still has feelings for Theo), though fate steps in and adds its own bag of tools to the mix.

The emotion of envy is shown well in this tale. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Story 9: Looking for a New Job

Down in the dumps at the possibility of losing his job, Jake returns home to find a couple of youths accosting his neighbour, Clarice. Jake wants to get to know Clarice better, but she seems distant. Why, I asked. A clever twist in the tale explained all. Another tale with a sad tinge, and yet again I counted my blessings.

Story 10: The Hostage Release Gang Cheats Death

Time passes; friends that were once so close drift apart with their roads of life taking different directions. Jake meets up with Allen, and they agree to gather the old gang together for old time’s sake. In each other’s company once more, there is one person that Jake wants to see above all the others. But, will she turn up?

A sweet tale of the past and present and how love does sometimes burn brightly despite years of separation.

Summary: Cruising the Green of Second Avenue, Volume Two, allowed me to revisit everyone from Volume one. I slipped back into Jake’s life easily, feeling as though I knew them all—good character development, an easy voice, and funny lines saw to that. Once again, a brilliant set of short stories that involve everyone in Jake’s life. Here’s hoping there is a Volume Three.

REVIEW:

While Joss recovers in hospital, Jake does his job and detects the answer to who has been making the terrible noises in Joss’ place. The web is thicker than I anticipated, and the reveal was partly a surprise. Jake has proof that the tea bags Joss had used for her tea were poisoned and confronts the person responsible for giving Joss the bags. With a few rogues to choose from, I read The Edge of Sanity, Book 5 with eager anticipation to see if I could figure out whodunnit.

A great end to a fun, thrilling set of chapbooks!

The pranksters step up their joke and frighten Eleanor further. Not content with making noises, one of the jesters reveals themselves. Frightened, Eleanor telephones Rodney, the police officer dealing with her case. He arrives swiftly. Lily telephones and asks if Eleanor would like to stay with her for a while, and Rodney takes her there.

Though attracted to Rodney, Eleanor can’t help but think of Michael and the feelings he inspires in her. Being with Rodney would be like taking second best. Still, Rodney is a kind man, and Eleanor is grateful for his presence.

However, Michael comes back into Eleanor’s life just when she least expects it—and with him comes the urge for Eleanor to have questions answered. What is being hidden from her. And why?

Oooooh! I’ll bite my nails until the next instalment arrives! I must find out what is going on!

What a hilarious spin on the tale of Cinderella. A talking pumpkin will have you smiling and laughing. Though a short tale, Cinderella Soup is well worth the read. One of the finer writers I have read, if this is a taste of Babe King’s writing ability, I’d bet you won’t be disappointed in any tale she’s written. A great voice, fun jokes, and a cute plot, I urge all lovers of light-hearted tales to give this story a read.

There isn’t any excuse not to. It’s free.

REVIEW:

Johnny writes to Kathryn while he is away at war. Their letters are charming—I almost felt guilty reading, as though I was sneaking a peek at someone’s private business. The love they share for one another is highly apparent (almost made me cry!), and though Johnny gets hurt, his injuries at least allow him to come home.

But—was it Katherine writing the letters to Johnny?

I’ll say no more, except that When Johnny Comes Home is a wonderful love story, made special by the setting, the year, the whole wartime experience. I really enjoyed this short tale, which actually seemed longer than what it was—in a good way!

REVIEW:

Polly Griggs returns home to find an eviction notice on her door—for violating the rules. She owns too many cats. Her landlord, Greeley, is a bully; he thumps on the door to further make it clear he wants Polly and her cats out of his building. A neighbour, Simon—who has an unfortunate stutter—tries to intervene, and Polly invites him into her apartment.

Cats, cats, and more cats—I’ve never had the image of so many in my head before! And Polly loves them all. Her main priority is to find somewhere that will allow her to bring her pets with her. That’s a tall order, considering the amount she has…

Things take an ominous turn when a package arrives for Polly. My stomach plummeted at the note that accompanied the parcel.

Favourite line (one I would love to utter myself): At least when I wake up in the morning I’m not UGLY!

I wanted to slap Greeley, hug Simon, and pat Polly’s arm to let her know I’d take care of some of her cats. Yes, if cats melt your heart, then so will Catastrophe.

A read that will have you muttering curses on Greeley and wishing you could step into the scene and punch him in the nose. And, of course, to adopt some of Polly’s adorable felines.

REVIEW:

Opening up with a terrific voice, Sweet Cicely gave me an immediate picture of Cicely. Having lost her job, her only other alternative is to find work at a temp agency. If she doesn’t earn a wage soon, her parents’ chinzy spare room would be her new abode—and Cicely doesn’t want to return home now she’s tasted freedom!

After visiting the agency, she remembers she needs some eggs. After a couple of minor catastrophes—but irritating ones all the same—Cicely manages to make it to the convenience store. Drenched from the rain, annoyed at the way her day and life are going, she had NOT planned on wearing the eggs…

Does Cicely’s day get any better, or do more upsets plague her? Is it possible for one girl to endure such mishaps and not end up going insane? Ms. McCrady has penned a great tale that has you remembering your own ‘off days’ and wishing the best for Cicely.

A delightfully funny read!

Favourite line: She looked like me—scraggly, rode hard and lined—only I had rain as an excuse.

Ah, what a great character. Loved this short tale!

His Christmas Bride Wild Rose Press

November 15, 2007

REVIEWED BY:

Author: Emily Becher
Publisher: Wild Rose Press

REVIEW:

Emmy Harris has three days to find a husband, before her father chooses one for her. She enlists the help of her friends Ginger and Lizzie, who draw up a shortlist of prospective candidates who’ll be present at the Christmas ball. And it really is a short list – two men, Marcus Fielding, the Earl of Winchelsea, and Logan Abernathy, Ginger’s elder brother.

Emmy isn’t sure of the affections of either. Last season she pushed herself at Winchelsea and made a fool of herself, and in August, Logan kissed her and she fell in love with him. But Logan has been conspicuously absent from her life since the kiss, and so Emmy wonders if she should settle for marrying comfortably rather than marrying for love.

She half-heartedly sets her cap at Winchelsea again, but her plans are ruined when Logan turns up, determined to win her from his rival. Matchmaking friends, scheming relatives and the whims of Fate all take a hand in this delightful novella - but come Christmas Day, who will end up with whom?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which read as easily as my favourite Mills & Boon Regency romances. There were some lovely details in this story – the tepid lemonade at a dance, clumps of ice clinging to polished black Hessians, the importance of brass buttons on a man’s jacket.

Favourite lines:

“Foolish man,” Emmy muttered. “Tell me again why—” “Because,” Ginger interrupted, “he’s unattached, titled, affluent, and devilishly handsome.”Emmy drew in a deep breath. “Right,” she said. “Unattached, titled, what else?”

“Affluent and devilishly handsome,” Ginger repeated diligently.

“And the fact that he views me as a mindless twit?”

“Should not be a deterrent.”

Emmy is a spirited, sympathetic heroine who feels torn between her head and her heart. The secondary characters, especially Lord and Lady Weyland, are fully-realised and add depth and wit to the plot without ever stealing the show. The interaction of Logan’s family members was enormous fun to read, and the scenes of the budding romance between Emmy and Logan were beautifully done.

Packed with gentle humour that made me smile – particularly the embarrassing ‘I love snow/I like bacon’ scene between Emmy and Winchelsea at breakfast – this was a real treat to read. Fans of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice may indulge themselves further by drawing comparisons and contrasts with Austen’s text and the events unfolding in Emmy’s life.

One small negative point - I’m not sure how historically accurate it is when Emmy describes her two best friends as ‘nutters’ and there are a few editorial mistakes that pulled me out of the narrative in places (the homonym ‘you’re’ for ‘your’, most noticeably).

However, the charm of this story far outweighs these considerations. His Christmas Brideis a delightful, engaging Regency romance I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.

And as a side-note: I see from the author’s blog that she’d started a sequel about Ginger and her suitor. I do hope Ms Becher continues this story, as I would love to see how things turn out for this second couple.

Exiled Wild Rose Press

November 15, 2007

REVIEWED BY:

REVIEW:

Nadia refuses to swear allegiance to the new Queen Vampire, jealous and bitter that her beloved Master has chosen a human, rather than her, to be his bride. As if that’s not bad enough, she finds herself exiled her from the coven. She must leave her trio of gorgeous blood-servants and go out alone into the world.

She recalls another vampire, Sera, who voluntarily left the coven and managed to survive. Nadia travels to San Francisco in the hope that Valentino, the owner of the male strip-club Captive Fantasy, will be able to help her find Sera. Before she goes to the club, she has an encounter with a hot hunk on the beach, then wipes his memory.

But Daniel, a marine biologist who makes more money stripping than he would ’saving Brazilian otters’, is wise to the tricks of vampires – his boss Valentino is one, and has taught him how to protect himself. Nadia intrigues him, and even though he knows she’s dangerous, he can’t stay away from her.

Can their relationship last the distance, or will jealousy, outside threats and their own differences as a human and a vampire destroy their happiness?

Okay, I admit it – I picked this to read because I was intrigued by the idea of a male stripper hero. Occasionally I really am that shallow. However, there was nothing superficial about Exiled - it promised a sexy escapist paranormal and it delivered on all fronts.

Exiled is part of a series set in and around the strip-club Captive Fantasy, but each story can be read as a standalone – but be warned, vampire erotica this good is addictive, and you may feel the urge to read the entire series.

Best exchange, between Daniel and Valentino:

“What I do when I’m off the clock and who I do it with are none of your business.” “I’m trying to protect you, Danny.”“From her?” Daniel snorted. “A bit hypocritical of you, isn’t it? Or have you had a change of lifestyle since I saw you last?”

Readers of erotica will appreciate the sizzling sex scenes in each chapter, each one varied and intimate. Unusually, this novella actually felt longer than it was – but in a good way. The characters are all bursting with personality and Ms Rosario makes every word count to express emotion and to further the plot.

While sex is the main focus, there’s also some real emotional tension here. The scene where Nadia realises that her bond with her three blood-servants had finally been broken is excellent – I could really feel her anguish and confusion. Also, I liked the way that Nadia is jealous, almost threatened, by Daniel’s job as a stripper. Even though she’s a powerful vampire, her reactions are like those of any normal woman, and in the second half of the story she struggles to overcome her jealousy of both Daniel and the Vampire Queen.

L Rosario has a strong authorial voice and a very readable style. I put off making my dinner for an hour so I could finish the story, and that doesn’t happen very often. A great read, warmly recommended.

REVIEW:

Eyes bandaged from a recent mishap, Tammy enjoys an encounter with Brandon that leaves her yearning for more of the sexy hunk. However, the poor woman drinks far too much of a special concoction aimed at making her better—not worse. Tammy spends quite some time in the toilet, which is hilariously portrayed. Her holiday of a lifetime is slowly turning into a nightmare, and if it wasn’t for meeting Brandon, she’d probably jet back home immediately.

Another truly funny instalment of Tahitian Nights, thoroughly enjoyed. I hope these chapbooks go on for quite some time. I enjoy reading about Tammy’s capers and the way fate seems to put a spoke in everything she attempts in the love stakes.

Great reading!

Cathy’s Angel Wild Rose Press

REVIEW:

Cathy is a widow with children. She’s battled on alone since her husband’s death and ponders the fact that a little help would be welcome. Men don’t seem interested in her. After all, she has children—baggage that some men run a mile from. A great believer in God, while out on a run, Cathy sprains her ankle. A good Samaritan in the shape of Jared comes along, and he helps Cathy home. Her children bombard him with questions. The scene here is a good one. The hectic pace of Cathy’s life is shown well, and the fact that she has kept it all together for such a long time is commendable to any woman in her situation. Bringing up four children is a feat in itself with a partner, so with out one… Cathy is an angel!
Determined to ensure Cathy sees a doctor, Jared sticks around for the day and experiences the frantic lifestyle Cathy leads. Though a shock that one woman copes with the same scenario day in, day out, Jared has also had much fun sharing his day with Cathy’s family.

Dare Cathy hope that Jared will become a friendly helping hand in her life? She’d prayed to God on her jog that morning that someone would appear to help ease the burden. And though she’d sprained her ankle—an inconvenience she really didn’t need—as a reader I pondered the fact that God does indeed work in mysterious ways.

An enjoyable tale with much energy. Cathy’s longing for a break is well done and, despite loving her children wholly, she understands she needs some time for herself too. I related to this scenario, hence me enjoying Cathy’s Angel very much.

Hooked from line one!

Shannon is a police dispatcher, so her job has its fair share of harrowing phone calls. Just when she thought she’d heard it all, a particularly ominous call comes through… Her training galvanises her into action, and she keeps the caller talking. However, he disconnects the call.

The call is linked to a homicide that Detective Montgomery is investigating. He speaks with Shannon about the call and the information she gleaned from it.

As well as her job, she has her ex, Kyle, on her mind. Is she really over him? A rose is delivered to her house, and Shannon receives a silent phone call. Has the caller from the other night found out where she lives?

A Christmas Stalking offers thrills, excitement, and a web of intrigue. I really did enjoy this short story and wished it had been a lot longer. Shannon’s fear is palpable, as is her determination not to be frightened—though she undoubtedly is. An exciting read!

Caroline is a workaholic. Though she loves her job, she resents the fact that it overpowers her relationship with the charming Joshua. He’s called a couple of times since yesterday, but her workload has prevented her from returning his calls. When she does, Joshua is as understanding as ever. He, too, is a busy man.

Sometimes it takes a while to stop and smell the roses. Joshua shows Caroline that it’s time to do that. Yes, her job is important, but so is her well-being, and the love of a good man is far more important than running herself into the ground for her boss.

The Perfect Candidate proves Joshua is just that. In fact, they are perfect for each other. The hustle and bustle of Caroline’s life is well shown—I got caught up in the rush. And I sighed along with her when she took a little time to nurture her wonderful relationship with the equally wonderful man in her life.

Jody, a librarian, has found that since her divorce, instead of being carefree, she’s introverted. She was a military wife for twenty years, so to thrust herself out there as a single woman is daunting to say the least. She is to attend her cousin’s wedding. However, her ex-husband will also be there. With his fabulous new wife.

Jody’s worries are well executed. I felt so sorry for her and understood how she must be feeling. Despite knowing people at the wedding, Jodie will have to face the looks of sorrow thrown her way, feel the humiliation of being dateless.

Enter Cliff, a neighbour she doesn’t know too well but who agrees to accompany her to the wedding in exchange for her services in cleaning up his house and cooking a meal. A fair exchange, Jody agrees, and while making his house respectable, she spots a Celtic brooch…

Will the wedding go off without a hitch? Will Jody turn from wallflower to bouquet of blooms? And, more importantly, will she cast aside her insecurities and realise that life has so much more to offer?

A charming read that held my interest the whole way through. I especially liked the way Jody and Cliff got to know one another. Ms. O’Connor wrote the ‘getting-to-know-you’ scenes so that they are effortless to read and believable. Great!

A Rose of Any Colour. Book 2: MaleDom Freya’s Bower

November 7, 2007

REVIEWED BY:

OVERALL SCORE:

Author: Multiple
Publisher: Freya’s Bower

REVIEW:

I found the foreword on this book very interesting. Not being part of the BDSM lifestyle, I was grateful for the explanation to that lifestyle before reading any of the stories. The foreword and understanding of the lifestyle is a must, in my opinion, before tackling BDSM as your reading matter. The reason for this is because without that understanding, the stories may very well have come across as perverted or wrong in some way to those people, like myself, who had no previous knowledge of what some people practise in their lives.

That said, here is my review.

Story 1: On Bended Knees – Canice Brown-Porter

The Dominant Evan has been training the submissive Morgan for four months now. Morgan, along with growing as a submissive and learning all she yearned to know about the BDSM lifestyle, has found that she has developed feelings for Evan. Her training comes to an end and, though she is glad that she’s been a good student, she is also saddened that her time spent with Evan has come to an end. Morgan offers Evan the gift of her submission—but will he accept it and become her Lord?

Evan sends Morgan back to her home and instructs that she records all her feelings and emotions in a diary. She must show him all of her in these writings and obey all the instructions he sets out for her. He will know if she doesn’t. The time spent alone without Evan is hard for Morgan—her longings and emotions are particularly well-drawn by Ms. Brown-Porter.

I enjoyed On Bended Knees for the understanding way Ms. Brown-Porter portrayed the lifestyle. I also enjoyed having a story to read as well as erotic content. On Bended Knees is actually a quite beautiful love story. Don’t let the BDSM theme fool you there. Again, this is where the foreword was appreciated.

Story 2: Little Book of Fantasies – Miranda Heart

Kaitlyn’s boyfriend, Steve, hasn’t quite got the idea of BDSM right. Kaitlyn is the submissive, but Steve isn’t respecting her and abiding by the BDSM rules. He drags her off—basically kidnaps her—in an attempt to give her what he thinks she needs. Aghast, Kaitlyn wonders how the hell to get herself out of the situation when Steve takes her to a train car kitted out with a bed and other things…

Not only does Steve violate BDSM rules, he has also violated Kaitlyn’s privacy. By reading her diary and finding out her deepest fantasies. However, though Steve has gone about things the wrong way, all is not lost. As the tale progresses, I learned that had Steve and Kaitlyn been upfront and open about their wants and desires from the start of their relationship, they wouldn’t have had crossed wires. Okay, so kidnapping your girlfriend is a little more than crossed wires, but that scenario isn’t quite as it first appears. With communication and a new understanding of one another’s desires, Steve and Kaitlyn are able to rise to a new level in their relationship.

I enjoyed the kidnap aspect—what can I say, I love reading thrillers!—but also appreciated the light bulb going on in my head with regards to what Ms. Heart is trying to say. I enjoy tales where reading between the lines says more than those actual lines. Little Book of Fantasies is one such tale. It goes from a frightening episode to learning about the lifestyle and what one couple are prepared to do to be together. Kaitlyn learns to love and trust, and Steve is able to be the person he has always been, except in the past, he’s always had to hide it.

Story 3: A Scandalous Arrangement – Kayleigh Jamison

Anna has been sent to work for a madam. Given the new name of Rose, she is thrust into a whole new way of life. Lily, another girl, has been instructed to get Rose prepared for her first night. An amusing exchange about the removal of pubic hair and the fact that two women could pleasure one another made me smile, for Rose is shocked by Lily’s blasé approach to what she does for a living, and Lily obviously doesn’t see what she does as anything but normal. Hilarious.

Rose is put on display for the gentlemen that visit Madame’s establishment. Uncomfortable and out of her depth, Rose is surprised when one of society’s prominent males, Vere Fane, selects her. He ‘purchases’ her, and Rose is sent to his home, where she is to become his submissive. Though shocked by this turn of events, events out of her control, Rose learns that her predicament isn’t quite as alarming as she first thought. That feelings and emotions that she has kept hidden are encouraged to run free. At last, Rose is able to be the real Rose.

I enjoyed A Scandalous Arrangement because it shows the character arc of Rose very well, that she literally blooms from a bud into a beautiful flower.

Story 4: Unwrapping Amy – Emily Ryan-Davis

Amy’s marriage is on the slippery slope. Her husband, Mac, doesn’t understand her wants. Her friend, Elizabeth, urges her to show Mac what she needs before he walks out of her life for good. Communication has been lost between the married couple, and Mac sleeping on the sofa doesn’t help matters either.

Mac sees Amy as someone to cherish and nourish. He can’t quite get to grips with the fact that though his treatment of her is appreciated, she needs so much more to feel fulfilled wholly.

Amy sets out to show Mac exactly what she wants. She devises a plan and, though it shocks Mac to begin with, he soon realises that to keep Amy, he must learn to accept her for who she is—totally.

A nice tale where a previously rocky marriage gains a second shot at reconciliation. I liked Mac’s character, one of a sensitive man who only wants what is best for his wife and marriage. His indecision on whether to admit that he desires exactly what Amy does is touching, for he didn’t realise that he felt the same as her. Always taught that a man should respect a woman, his assumptions about the BDSM lifestyle as something wrong had been ingrained in his mind by scenarios from his past. To understand that Amy’s desires were absolutely fine, and that he can still nurture Amy while participating in the BDSM lifestyle was something that Mac had to discover for himself. The shroud surrounding BDSM fell, and Mac finally understood.

Story 5: Efflorescence – Katrina Strauss

Hannah is a model. Set in the days where advertisements are painted, she’s done her fair share of Coca-Cola ads. She swaps an assignment with another model and makes her way to the Marxist, Pavel Rukavishnikov’s, studio. Hannah is aware that posing in underwear brings in more money, but it isn’t something that appeals to her. So, imagine her surprise and dilemma when Pavel informs her that his client wishes him to paint a ‘suggestive’ picture.

Pavel brings Hannah out of her shell. She spends much time sitting for him and grows closer to him every time she visits. Their relationship grows, and both character arcs are clearly defined as the tale progresses. Hannah and Pavel both have obstacles to overcome, and the blossoming of their relationship was a joy to read. I became incredibly interested in this couple and rooted for them. Touched by their dilemmas—some because of the time Efflorescence is set in, others because of barriers between a man and a woman—I will not forget this tale in a hurry. The combination of Hannah revisiting her past and recalling the tale of her youth and the mention of a rare blue rose brought me to tears. The elderly are sometimes perceived as just that—elderly. That they didn’t experience life, or have a youth is sometimes forgotten. Efflorescence crushes that misconception fabulously. Ms. Strauss has written such a fine tale that I’m very interested to read any other works she may have.

Efflorescence was my absolute favourite out of a fine set of tales because of the richness of the wording, the way the tale weaved through the character’s emotions, and the setting—no blips in the historical aspect that I could see. Whizzing back in time is always fascinating, but this historical tale has topped any that I have ever read so far. Tremendous!

Story 6: Touching Down – Joe Wilson

Pita received Joe’s collar many years ago, and the couple have enjoyed a special relationship since. Each morning, Joe ensures that Pita is happy—he prefers it that any discontent is dealt with and not allowed to fester. Joe adores Pita—this is highly evident as soon as the tale begins.

Pita often feels ‘out of sorts’. Joe usually lets her work through her own problems—Pita has a private room in which to be alone—but sometimes, Pita needs Joe’s help to smooth out any internal struggles she may be having. This particular day, she is worrying about losing a bracelet and asks Joe to ease her tension.

The love they share, both for the lifestyle and each other, shines from the page and it becomes more evident as Touching Down unravels. Joe looks like your Average Joe—pardon the pun—and he thinks about how other people may react if they knew what lifestyle he practised. Intensely private, he prefers to keep certain things to himself.

Pita shares his desires. She taught him how to love, how to feel, and he would do anything for her. Joe is the man many females desire. Someone who genuinely cares. I enjoyed reading about Joe and Pita’s relationship, how it flourished and grew. I also liked seeing how they both respected one another—how Pita craved to trust Joe, and how Joe craved to show her she could trust him.

Highly enjoyable!

Summary: An excellent set of tales.

REVIEW:

Book II introduces several new characters to this chapbook series. Tanith discovers that her long time best friend, a warlock named Jamison, has had a romantic interest in her for quite some time. However, she pushes him aside in an attempt to keep their friendship–and his blood–in tact. Emotionally wounded, Jamison leaves, but before Tanith can escape to the comfort of her privately owned club, Cale, another vampire, enters her apartment. Although I’m not certain what Cale’s brief appearance means, I’m sure I’ll find out in book III.

At the club, the bloodlust is overwhelming Tanith, and she quickly meets up with a blond man who suits her need to have sex and to sup upon. They leave the club together, but Tanith realises that he’s another warlock. And he knows she’s a vampire. Could he be the hunter out to rid the world of the Old Ones? Who knows? We’ll just have to wait for book III for the answer.

Favourite line: He was putting out male pheromones like there was no tomorrow, and I didn’t think I’d be able to keep my fangs in my mouth where they belonged.

REVIEW:

Invited to a party, Jack drives down Mutton Hollow Road. Unable to find the party and without cell phone coverage, he can’t contact his friend to ask directions. His petrol gauge was ominously low when he started off down Mutton Hollow Road—more of a long, deserted lane than any usual residential area—and it dings to alert Jack that his tank is empty.

Luckily, a house is nearby. Jack approaches it and rings the doorbell…

William lives in the house. He answers the door and finds the delicious Jack on his doorstep. Not only does William crave Jack in the sexual sense, but William owns fangs…

A great short story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The creep-factor of a dark street on Halloween is well shown, and tension is prevalent throughout the tale that kept this reader riveted! Fine job!

REVIEW:

Ice Crystal is the story of a recently widowed young woman and her struggle to overcome a repressive and oppressive relationship.

As the story begins, Crystal is reeling from the recent loss of her husband in a plane crash. She is a broken woman and she seeks refuge with her dog, Jake, at her grandmother’s home in the mountains of Sweden. Here, with some help from a mysterious dream man, she is able to find the strength she needs to become the woman she was always meant to be.

I thoroughly enjoyed Becca Dale’s Ice Crystal. Ms. Dale has written the story of a woman that readers will easily relate to. When we enter Crystal’s life, she’s just suffered a devastating loss and is trying to put her life back together. The pain of her husband’s death and her uncertainty about her future are realistically portrayed and I could definitely understand where the character was coming from.

Enter sexy Nordic god incarnate, Von, to show Crystal that while her life may have temporarily taken a downturn, there is still lots more living to do. His panacea of choice? Mind-bending, soul-shattering orgasms. Sign me up, please!

Becca Dale’s Ice Crystal is an engrossing, touching and thoughtful read from an author that I hope to read more from in the near future.
